Finding a person’s contact information should be easy, but when an employee leaves a company, their old information still exists on lists and databases. Once you’ve left the company, all you need to do is go into your account settings page and indicate what happened (i.e., terminated employment) so that everyone else can stop trying to reach you. As I was driving there, my boss called me on the phone and told me to be prepared to talk about difficult topics when we got back from our trip. At first I was really nervous because he didn’t tell me what those topics were going to be; but now I think he might have been telling me in advance so that way I could prepare myself. It turns out that his team wanted us as leaders to set an example by talking openly and honestly about some very sensitive subjects including diversity training, sexual harassment prevention, alcoholism among employees (especially managers), company policies on LGBT+ rights, religious tolerance in the workplace, etcetera. In order to make sure these conversations would go smoothly, my boss had already organized small groups beforehand so that people would feel comfortable opening up and sharing their experiences. When we arrived back from our business trip, the meeting started off with each group explaining what they talked about over the weekend which made it easier for everyone else who hadn’t gone on the retreat yet. Some people shared really personal stories like being abused by their own parents while others talked about how they dealt with discrimination based on religion or sexuality. Hearing other people’s experiences helped me realize that I’m not alone. It was also comforting to know that even though things are tough right now, it won’t always be this way. After the break, my boss continued by talking about career opportunities within the company and then asked if anyone had any questions. We ended the day with a brief prayer before everyone left for lunch. It turned out that my boss had prepped me well enough because when he asked me during the question time, I felt confident enough to share something that happened recently at work. My manager made some inappropriate comments about the recent changes in our healthcare policy and how they related to birth control pills. He then proceeded to ask me where I stood on abortion, apparently trying to see if I was someone who would understand his opinion better than someone else might. I quickly changed the subject but afterward, he kept asking for my opinion every time we spoke about birth control which put a lot of pressure on me since no matter what answer I gave him, it seemed like it wouldn’t satisfy him. It was a relief to hear that my company actually had a clear stance on this issue and is supportive of both women and men in whatever decision they make. I guess it was good that he asked me what I thought, too, because it showed me how much he values my opinion. Later on, I realized that he never talked about anything controversial with the rest of the team and would only bring it up with me whenever we were alone together. So I confronted him about it and he said that he wasn’t trying to offend me by doing that – instead, he wanted to give me an opportunity to voice my thoughts freely without worrying about how people would react. It was really frustrating because he made me doubt my own opinion and I had to find out from my boss that the company supported me. Even worse, my manager was a married man and I found out later that he had kids. It’s pretty shocking to think that people who advocate for family values would act this way. Anyway, now I make sure to keep some distance between him and me because it’s not worth it to deal with this kind of stuff at work.
